Next morning I wake with a thick head. Edward’s tanned face is next to me. I realise it’s happened again, but I have no memory of it. Another blackout. I slip out from under the covers and tiptoe to the bathroom. I don’t shower but give my face a splash and try to remove last night’s make-up. Brush my teeth. When I re-emerge from the bathroom, towel wrapped around me, Edward is gone.

So much for connection.

Looking at the empty space in the bed, the ruffled duvet and general disarray of a night of illicit sex, that familiar feeling of shame and regret descends upon me. Why do I sleep with strangers? I should have more sense. Drinking makes me do stupid things. I become careless. After all, he could be a killer, a serial killer of women. How would I know? Then my logical brain kicks in. I’m an emancipated woman. I should be able to sleep with whoever, whenever. But no matter how much I debate this logically in my head, my psyche says otherwise.
